Drinking spot operator in court for allegedly possessing narcotic drugs

A 52-year-old bar owner who was in possession of a large amount of dried leaves thought to be narcotic drugs made an appearance before an Accra Circuit Court.

George Akoto entered a not guilty plea after being accused of illegally possessing narcotic drugs.

Mr. Bright Samuel Acquah, the relieving judge, granted Akoto bail in the amount of GHC 100,000 with three sureties, one of whom had to be able to prove their justification with landed property.

The case will now take place on February 12, 2024. Police officers stationed at the Police Intelligence Directorate are the complainants in this case, according to the prosecution.

According to the prosecution, the defendant owns a business at “June 4,” an Accra suburb.

In an effort to crack down on criminal activity within the enclave, the Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) and the Formed Police Unit (FPU) launched an intelligence-led operation at Kantamanto Market and its surroundings on January 19, 2024.

The prosecution claims that during the operation, the team detained roughly 62 suspects, including the defendant.

It stated that a large amount of dried leaves thought to be narcotic drugs were found during a search at Akoto’s drinking location.

When the accused was questioned about the source of his supply, the prosecutor said, “he admitted ownership,” adding that the alleged drug supplier was a certain man at Timber Market. However, the accused did not provide the police with the man’s location.

The man was being tried, according to the prosecution, in order to help with the investigations.
