The Cameroun Football Federation’s executive committee rejected former African Player of the Year Samuel Eto’o’s resignation on Monday, which was a setback in his attempt to step down as president.
The record-holder for most African Player of the Year awards, Eto’o, has been involved in a number of scandals involving claims of wrongdoing, match-fixing, and corruption.
The federation revealed in a statement that its executive committee met to evaluate the national team’s performance at the Africa Cup of Nations in Yaoundé, the capital of Cameroon. Eto’o offered to resign at the start of the meeting and urged the other participants to follow suit “in good faith.”
But after much discussion and consideration, the executive committee resolved to stick to their current mandates. They expressed a renewed faith in Eto’o’s ability to lead Cameroun football’s reconstruction and development in accordance with the plan that was approved by the elective general assembly on December 11, 2021, the day Eto’o took office.
Following the national team’s dismal performance at the Africa Cup, questions remain regarding the future of Cameroun coach Rigobert Song, even though the federation’s statement made no mention of any additional decisions or conclusions.
The five-time champion Cameroun barely made it to the knockout round before Nigeria eliminated them with a dismal round of 16 performance.
Over the past year, Eto’o has been the target of allegations of corruption, including claims of power abuse, match-fixing, and other misbehavior. Eto’o is still under investigation by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA’s ethics committee. Until proven guilty, Eto’o is considered innocent.
Concerns have also been raised by the former Barcelona and Inter Milan player’s ambassadorial role with a sports betting company, which may have violated institutional codes and prompted complaints from clubs.
Football in Cameroon has faced difficulties in the past, such as accusations of corruption, government meddling, and broken pledges. After serving as Cameroon’s representative at four World Cups from 1998 to 2014, Eto’o took office as president with expectations for reform and advancement in the sport.
