A minimum of three years in prison and a maximum of five years in prison have been approved by Parliament for those found to be knowingly endorsing, sponsoring, or assisting LGBTQ+ activities.
Moreover, a minimum sentence of six months and a maximum sentence of three years await those found guilty of such acts.
Sam Nartey George, the MP for Ningo Prampram, explained the reasoning behind the punitive measures during parliamentary deliberations on the clause-by-clause amendment of the bill concerning the promotion of proper human sexual rights and Ghanaian family values.
He emphasized that rather than people’s private behavior, the public is more concerned with the advocacy and promotion of such activities.
George gave an explanation of the sentence structure, saying, “For individuals caught engaging in these activities themselves, the punishment ranges from a minimum of six months to a maximum of three years.
“However, for those actively promoting, sponsoring, or supporting such agendas, the penalty increases to a minimum of three years and a maximum of five years.”
