Haruna Iddrisu, the Tamale South member of parliament, is requesting immediate action to alleviate the severe water shortages in the Tamale Metropolis.

The former Minority Leader clarified that the challenge has placed a great deal of strain on hospitals and schools, particularly in Tamale, in a brief statement on the House floor on Wednesday.

In order to provide some respite to the community’s residents, he demanded a resolution.

This was not the only concern voiced by him.

Samson Ahi, the MP for Bodi, also urged the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources and the National Security to move in with water tankers to serve the community.

Due to their taps being closed for several months, some areas of Tamale Metropolis have experienced a water shortage.

Some individuals from the Zujung and Dundu communities claimed they were forced to use contaminated water. The arrival of the harmattan, which is drying up most of the water bodies, has made their situation worse.

These locals claim they are unable to recall the last time they had water fall from their faucets.

A Ghanatodayonline visit revealed how the water situation has forced residents of these communities to rely on murky water from hand-dugout small pits behind the Zoomlion Company Limited offices on the Zujung cemetery road.

For these residents, the “mapuka pits”, a name they have coined for this water source, is what they have been relying on since the rains stopped.

But they are afraid their only source of water will soon dry up.

These and many other communities in Tamale face this crisis every year, especially during the dry season.

Last year, many communities in both Tamale Metropolis and Sagnarigu Municipality suffered severe water crisis, forcing residents to travel several kilometers in search of water.
