NDC condemns Akufo-Addo’s silence on flood victims in 2024 SONA

Concerns have been raised by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Volta Region over President Nana Addo-Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s failure to mention the conditions of those impacted by the recent flood calamity in the State of the Nation Address (SONA) for 2024.

According to the NDC, those impacted by the Kpong and Akosombo dam spills in the Volta Region found the State of the Nation’s Address to be unsatisfactory.

In the Volta and neighboring places, the recent flood disaster wreaked devastation, uprooting numerous families and ruining livelihoods.

The people’s suffering has been exacerbated by the assault of tidal surges in the three southern municipalities of Anlo, Keta, and Ketu South, leaving them exposed and in critical need of aid.

The SONA “was particularly disappointing for the people in the Volta Region,” according to a statement signed by Sorkpa Kafui Agbleze, the NDC’s Volta Regional Communications Officer. These people had been hoping for a relieving update on the several promises made earlier to ease their predicaments in the wake of the disaster.

The NDC states that the public anticipated hearing about the distribution of the “GHS220 million” allotted in the 2024 Budget to assist the impacted communities, as well as the funds from the World Bank under the IDA Crisis Response Window (CRW) to assist with the victims’ resettlement, restitution of their means of subsistence, recompense, and infrastructure reconstruction in the impacted communities.

It expressed regret that, in the face of these precarious challenges, the President did not acknowledge or provide solutions to lessen the suffering of fellow citizens, highlighting the fact that the 31-page SONA’s glaring omission of any mention of relief efforts or plans to mitigate the disaster’s effects is a deliberate lack of empathy and commitment to these citizens’ well-being.

The President’s reference on page 22 of his presentation to a project that does not exist, such as the Keta Fish Landing Site, is similarly objectionable, according to the NDC.

It therefore demanded that relief aid be given, affected communities be rehabilitated, and sustainable measures be put in place to prevent future occurrences, and that the President “urgently address this issue and prioritise the needs of those affected by the flood disaster and tidal waves.”
