On Thursday, March 14, 2024, Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Rashid Bawa, tragically passed away while in Nigeria. The 83-year-old diplomat will be buried in Ghana in accordance with Islamic tradition after being returned home.
In Ghana’s diplomatic scene, Rashid Bawa played a number of important roles. Notably, he represented Ghana in Saudi Arabia as ambassador from 2005 to 2008. Before entering the diplomatic field, he ran as an independent candidate and held the position of Member of Parliament for the Akan Constituency from 2001 to 2005.
Rashid Bawa was named Ghana’s ambassador to Nigeria in June 2017 by President Akuffo-Addo, who acknowledged his experience and commitment to the diplomatic field. His selection fit into a bigger plan that selected eight eminent Ghanaians to head different diplomatic posts across the globe.
Rashid Bawa’s death is deeply felt in both Ghana and Nigeria, where he left behind a legacy of selfless service and devotion to his nation.
