In the event that he wins the December elections, National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his pledge to legalize the operations of “okada” riders.
In order to guarantee appropriate business regulation, he has also stated his plan to offer electric motorbikes for commercial usage and to educate riders.
Motorbikes and tricycles are often utilized for business purposes all around the nation, despite the fact that using them is officially prohibited. These cars are becoming the main form of transportation in many rural communities.
In a dialogue with Worawora community members in the Oti Region’s Biakoye Constituency, Mr. Mahama said, “If we come into power, we will legalise okada business. We will train you on how to go about the business, being able to ride the motorbikes alone does not make you a commercial rider. We will register all of you so your operation can be regulated.”
He added “There are electric motorbikes which run on electricity. Once you charge it at night, you are good to go. It consumes less electricity and it is better than using fuel. We will introduce them if we come to power.”
In September 2020, Mr. Mahama declared that if he won the December elections, his government would buy motorbikes to help the commercial transportation industry.
According to him, passengers would receive help through a variety of payment plans to encourage long-term individual car ownership, which will boost the nation’s employment rate. His position was in line with the party’s platform, which called for the legalization of “Okada” businesses.
The NPP administration, however, opposed Mr. Mahama’s proposal to regularize the company.
