Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s progressive vision of tax digitalization is worth pursuing, according to Dr. Clement Osei Amoako, President of the Ghana Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The President of the Ghana Chamber of Commerce stated that digitizing the system is the best approach to achieve the nation’s tax administration goals during his speech at the GNCCI’s Dialogue with the Vice President of the Republic, Dr. Bawumia, on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, at the Best Western Hotel, Accra.
“The Chamber acknowledges government’s effort led primarily by His Excellency the Vice President towards championing a new era of a digitalized Ghana. An era where registration, documentation, payments, revenue collection, public consultations, citizens identification, among other key business activities are made easier and faster leveraging the power of digital technologies” Mr Amoako stated.
According to Dr. Osei Amoako, this has helped to significantly reduce institutional bureaucracy and reduce corruption.
The Chamber also recognized the government’s efforts over the previous seven years to guarantee sustainable economic growth and development, particularly in the wake of the Russia-Ukraine war and the COVID-19 epidemic, which had a severe negative impact on the economy.
“These efforts have contributed to significant decline in inflation from a record high of 54.1 percent in December 2022 to 23.2 percent in February 2024” he said.
Recall that Vice President Bawumia announced several policy initiatives to further formalize the Ghanaian economy at the delivery of his vision for Ghana event in February of this year.
These included stepped-up efforts to digitize, which will encompass digitizing the nation’s tax system. The event took place on the campus of the University of Professional Studies, Accra.
