An accident occurred during a test run of Ghana’s freshly purchased train, which came from Poland and was meant to travel on the Tema-Mpakadan railway line.

The accident occurred at around 12:10 p.m. on the same day, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Railways Development on Thursday, April 18, 2024.

The train approached the bend at Km76+100 and came into contact with a stationary vehicle that was positioned squarely across the rail track, according to the Ministry.

“Despite the immediate application of the emergency braking system, the train was unable to come to a complete stop before colliding with the vehicle.”

The Ministry assured that no fatalities were recorded as passengers, drivers, crew and bystanders are all safe.

“It is important to note that the vehicle was unmanned, and the location where it was found is not designated as an authorized level crossing. Thankfully, there were no injuries sustained by passengers on the train or bystanders. However, there was minor damage to the driver’s cab section of the train.”

It mentioned that the incident has been reported to the police and investigations are currently underway.

“The incident has been promptly reported to the Police, and investigations are currently underway to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident. The DMU involved has been moved to the Workshop for further assessment and necessary repairs.”

The Ministry pledged to maintain the safe running of the railway system and gave the public assurances of security.

“We assure the public that ensuring the safe running of our railway systems is our top priority and that safety will always come first. We implore all parties involved to operate railroad tracks with caution and to follow safety procedures.

The two modern diesel-powered trains were purchased by the government from Poland in order to improve the railway transportation network.
