The District Registration Review Committee of the Electoral Commission has declared dozens of purported non-residents ineligible for registration after they were bused from the Volta Region to the Asuogyaman constituency in Eastern Region.
These people were unable to identify significant landmarks or offer pertinent details about the areas they claimed to live in, which made it impossible for them to demonstrate that they were residents.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) agents who dismissed the applicants mostly contested their eligibility on the grounds that they were not actual inhabitants but had been brought to the region for registration.
The committee’s decision to disqualify around twenty-three applications and seize their voter ID cards infuriated Pius Enam Hadzide, the parliamentary candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Hadzide, who is also the CEO of the National Youth Authority, charged prejudice and bribery against the committee’s other members, including the Police, and its chairman, Nana Asare Akowua (III), Krontihene of the Akwamu Traditional Area.
The committee called Pius Enam Hadzide because these accusations were not treated lightly.
Later, Pius Hadzide expressed regret for his remarks and clarified that he had made the jokes.
The deadline for registering new voters is May 27, 2024; the registration period opened on May 7, 2024.
The deadline for the current limited voter registration exercise has been extended, according to the Ghanaian Electoral Commission (EC).
The commission announced on social media that the registration period has been extended by two days, with a new expiration date of Wednesday, May 29, 2024.
The initial plan was for the limited voter registration exercise to conclude on May 27, 2024, however it began on May 7, 2024.
In its statement, the commission clarified that the purpose of the extension was to compensate for the technological difficulties encountered during the exercise’s first two days.
“The Electoral Commission is pleased to inform the public that the ongoing Voters’ Registration Exercise has been extended for two additional days.
“The exercise will now end on Wednesday, the 29th of May 2024. This arrangement has been put in place to make up for the network challenges experienced during the first two days of the Registration Exercise,” parts of the statement read.
It added, “The Commission aims to ensure that all eligible voters who wish to register are afforded the opportunity to do so. We urge all eligible citizens who are yet to register to visit the Commission’s office in the district where they reside to register to vote.”
