The leadership of the Trades Union Congress has received assurances from Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), that he will cut government spending and use the money saved to raise worker salaries.
On May 29, 2024, in Accra, Dr. Bawumia provided the promise during a meeting with TUC leadership.
“I am very key on reducing government expenditure so that the fiscal space will be created to increase in the salaries of workers,” he assured.
The Vice President and the TUC engaged in order for him to get input from the TUC in order to formulate his manifesto.
Dr. Bawumia focused on plans to implement efforts to boost industries throughout the conversation.
He thought back to workers’ and industry executives’ comments about exorbitant utility bills.
Bawumia guaranteed to bring in solar panels to increase the nation’s energy needs.
“When we talk about two thousand megawatts we are talking about a whole lot of solar panels, so Ghana should not just import solar panels, the technology exists for us to manufacture solar panels in Ghana,” he said.
The TUC’s Secretary General, Dr. Yaw Baah, vowed to work with the next administration to support its employment-related measures.
He stated, “We think that the Bank of Ghana should stop it’s over reliance on inflation targeting and focus more on job creation, because the BoG has a major role to play.”
