The public has been cautioned by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) not to buy “fake” meters from unidentified sources.

The service provider claims that it is the only organization required by law to provide meters to the general public and that anyone found to be in violation of this will be prosecuted.

Speaking on Monday, June 3, 2024, on OTEC FM breakfast show, Mr. Benjamin Obeng Antwi, ECG Public Relations Officer/Ashanti West Region, Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) expressed concern about the number of phony meters entering the system and how this was hurting the company’s ability to collect money from customers.

According to Antwi, since these fictitious meters could not track usage, they let users use electricity without paying for it.

“ We have information that some of those meters can be traced from Côte d’Ivoire. The whole of the meter case is empty. What is in it is only this one and this one is not any circuit that can measure energy usage, it is only a display board. Within the metre is a bar that connects the output and input terminal directly He told the program’s host Captain Koda.

He claimed that the way some of the fake meters were made and molded made it easy for fires to start.

So, potential clients in the Ashanti Region have been advised by Mr. Benjamin Obeng Antwi to refrain from purchasing meters from vendors other than the business.

He claimed that the company had enough meters to fulfill consumer demand and that, in order to help alleviate delays, the district had been told to expedite the meter procurement process.

While the firm monitored and audited energy meters and other equipment as part of its core operations, he urged the public and potential ECG customers to avoid using such fake meters. He also added that the company would find out about them.
