The Electoral Commission (EC) has received a request from the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) to set up voter transfer centers on college campuses throughout the nation.
The goal of this appeal is to support students who are registered voters but are unable to vote in their home constituency because of their academic obligations.
As the official voice of Ghanaian students, NUGS represents approximately 12.5 million students at all levels of education, from foundational to graduate, both domestically and abroad.
The organization, which is divided into six blocks, is committed to promoting the interests and well-being of students.
In order to provide high-quality, easily accessible education for all Ghanaians, regardless of their social, religious, or racial backgrounds, NUGS actively engages with stakeholders.
NUGS stated in a statement on Wednesday, June 5 that a large number of students are presently enrolled in classes that are distant from the places where they are registered to vote.
The statement made clear that although many students are in the middle of their midterm exams, final-year students are heavily engaged in their final project research. A big worry is the cost of returning to their registered voting locations, especially considering the nation’s economic woes.
Article 42 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana says, “Every citizen of Ghana of eighteen years or above who is of sound mind has the right to vote.” NUGS emphasized the need of guaranteeing that students can use their constitutional right to vote.
According to Article 43 of the Constitution, “A person shall be registered as a voter if they are a citizen of Ghana and are of eighteen years or above.” NUGS called on the EC to facilitate the transfer of votes for students in line with constitutional requirements. Article 45 stipulates that “A voter shall vote at the polling station where they are registered,” while Article 46 mandates that “The Electoral Commission shall make regulations for the transfer of votes.”
Enabling vote transfers, according to NUGS, would shield students from losing their rights and guarantee their complete involvement in the December election process.
