John Dramani Mahama, the former president and leader of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has promised to address the accommodation issues faced by rural teachers.
Mr. Mahama made the promise during a live Facebook broadcast over the weekend, stating that if elected president in the December 2024 elections, teacher accommodations would be included in new basic and secondary school designs.
“I have decided that in designing new schools for the basic and secondary levels, accommodation will be incorporated so that when teachers are posted to a school, they don’t have to live in an adjoining town and struggle with transportation,” said Mr. Mahama.
Furthermore, Mr. Mahama said that educators who consent to work in remote schools will be eligible for a 20 percent pay bonus.
He thinks that more teachers will accept jobs in rural areas as a result of this strategy.
