In an effort to provide the proper conditions for free, fair, peaceful, and credible elections on December 7, 2024, Speaker of the Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has begun corresponding with important state organizations.

“This, I believe, will inspire confidence in the process and faith in our democratic institutions. We will definitely not be doing this alone,” he stated. The National Media Commission, the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice, the National Commission for Civic Education, and the Electoral Commission Chairpersons were among the organizations he named.

The others who will be actively involved include the President, the Council of State, the National Security Council, national executive officers and flag bearers of political parties, the security forces, especially the police, the clergy, and prominent representatives of civil society.

Speaking during the opening remarks of the Third Meeting of the Fourth Session of the Eighth Parliament on Tuesday, Mr. Bagbin stated that the indications and signals on the state of affairs in the nation were not ones of confidence and optimism.

He pointed out that the joblessness, homelessness and hopelessness of the youth could not be taken lightly. “We must act together and now to prevent a journey to calamity or no return.

“Our citizens deserve better and we all must collectively unite to uphold their rights and safeguard their freedoms,” he stated.

Mr. Bagbin called on “all members to prioritise their work and ensure that we make progress on these important matters,” acknowledging that MPs had a substantial amount of work ahead of them.

In addition to planning and implementing strategies for carrying on life after Parliament, he acknowledged that some Members of Parliament were unable to attend their party’s primaries and that those who were re-elected to run in the parliamentary elections scheduled for December 2024 were also involved in campaigning.

“That notwithstanding, Parliament is called upon to consider some critical legislation, motions, agreements and oversight responsibilities to deepen the democratic culture and to ensure a smooth transition to the 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana,” he stated.

“Let us, as a political class, start together and finish together. The public doesn’t give a damn what goes on in between,” Mr Bagbin stated.
