Richard Steven Obeng, the coach of the National Amputee football team, disclosed that the team purchased the jerseys they wore at the African Amputee Cup of Nations (AAFCON) at the Kantamanto Market in Accra.
This disclosure follows Mustapha Ussif, Ghana’s Minister of Sports, who demanded that team administrators account for all money received from private donors after the team arrived from Egypt.
In response to the ministers’ demand, Richard Obeng stated in an interview with Starr FM that the team hardly receives the necessary funding and must rely heavily on donations from organizations and private citizens in order to be ready for tournaments.
He disclosed that in order to compete in the African Championship in Egypt, the team had to buy its jerseys from Kantamanto Market.
“We got our jerseys from Kantamanto for the 2024 AAFCON,” he said.
“The ministry of Sports only paid for the flight to and from Egypt and paid for the competition fees. All other cost was on us,” he added.
After defeating Morocco in an exciting final in Cairo, the Black Challenge squad successfully defended their AAFCON title and took home the prized trophy.
When the team paid former President John Mahama a courtesy call, he donated $10,000 to the group.
