According to a poll conducted by the National Investigation Bureau(NIB), party members strongly favor Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh(Napo), the Minister of Energy, to be Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia’s running mate.

5,116 NPP delegates from across the country participated in the survey, including national, regional, constituency, and polling station executives.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh received 76.2% of the answers from the executives surveyed, according to the report.

Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Bosomtwe MP and Minister of Education, came in second with 10.16%.

The delegates are also considering Bryan Acheampong, the Minister of Agriculture and Member of Parliament for the Abetifi Constituency, and Apostle Opoku Onyinah, the former Chairman of the Pentecost Church-Ghana.

Dr. Bawumia must make a decision among party heavyweights with the general election of 2024 only six months away.

In the meantime, the poll shows that there was broad agreement that the Ashanti Region should produce the running mate.

The majority of respondents, or 84%, said that Mr. Opoku Prempeh’s charisma and popularity among party members made him the perfect running mate for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, according to the NIB survey.

However, the NIB cautioned the flagbearer to exercise caution when choosing Dr. Prempeh in their idea.

“Given Dr Prempeh’s current role as the Minister of Energy, the ongoing power crises in Ghana
could impact his candidacy. Therefore, the government may need to implement necessary
measures to solidify his competence in managing the energy sector, thereby enhancing the party’s prospects in the 2024 general elections.”
