The government still honors the payment of trainee allowances, according to Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam.
According to him, 104,000 nursing trainees received stipend payments of GH¢219 million between January and June 2024.
Similarly, he stated during the mid-year budget presentation on Tuesday, July 23, that GH¢216 million had been granted as allowance to 67,000 teacher trainees for the 2023–2024 academic year.
Vice President Dr. Mahanudu Bawumia made the announcement on May 14, 2024, that the nation’s nursing and teacher trainees will receive their exceptional nursing trainee allowances for 2024.
After being discontinued by the former Mahama administration, the Akufo-Addo administration reinstated the teacher and nursing trainee allowances, however they had been stagnant for some months.
But when Dr. Bawumia broke the good news to a chorus of applause at a massive gathering with the young in Nalerigu, in the North East Region, many nurse and teacher trainees were there.
“On the nursing training allowance, we have been able to agree on what to do come this Thursday,” Dr. Bawumia said.
“The Minister of Finance has sent me a message which says that on Thursday, the Controller and Accountant General is going to transfer GH¢177 million to the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Health will transfer it to the Nursing trainees, ” he said.
“So I believe that, inshaa Allah, by next week, all of you should be receiving the nursing trainee allowances, and they will be in your accounts.”
The government of Ghana has decided to provide significant financial support to the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) program, the National Health Insurance Scheme(NHIS), and the school feeding initiative.
This decision was made in response to a request made by Minister of Finance Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam during his mid-year budget review, which was presented to Parliament on July 23, 2024.
Dr. Adam stressed the government’s unwavering commitment to improving the quality of life for all Ghanaians, especially the most vulnerable populations in the country. He said that the substantial disbursement reflects the government’s determination to provide social services and support.
“To reduce the burden on the vulnerable, we have disbursed GH¢5.4 billion to support LEAP, School Feeding Programme, Capitation Grant and NHIS since January 2024,” he said.
The greater part of these monies will go toward the LEAP program, which gives cash transfers to the nation’s poorest households. Over time, LEAP has shown to be an essential instrument for reducing poverty and raising standards of life. It is anticipated that the extra money would increase the program’s reach and make this essential help available to more homes.
