Finance Minister apologizes to Ghanaians over economic hardships

Mohammed Amin Adam, the Minister of Finance, has pleaded with Ghanaians to pardon the government for the financial struggles that they have endured.

Speaking at the GNAT Hall Regional Townhall Meeting and Exhibitions, Hon. Adam spoke about the successes and difficulties facing the economy since his administration entered office in 2017.

Notable speakers at the occasion were Hon. Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover, the Regional Minister for Greater Accra, and Hon. Fatimatu Abubakar, the Minister of Information.

The Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC) and the Ministry of Finance collaborated to arrange the conference, which had the dual purposes of promoting public participation and obtaining input for policy execution.

Hon. Adam clarified that the decision to restructure the nation’s debt was not a deliberate attempt to inflict hardship, but rather a requirement enforced by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

“No government intends to impose hardship on its people, especially not the NPP Government, which has demonstrated its commitment to reducing the burden on Ghanaians”.

The success of the domestic exchange program, which attracted 95% of participants, was emphasized by the Finance Minister.

He pointed out that postponing it would have impeded the revival of the economy because it was a crucial choice at the time.

He also discussed how Ghana’s debt-to-GDP ratio improved, falling from 72% to 70.6%, a percentage he called “far better than the 2015 record.”
