Former President John Mahama has stated that his government will look for alternatives to the controversial betting tax if he is elected president on December 7, 2024.
Speaking on Monday during a town hall meeting in Accra with a group of young people, Mr. Mahama emphasized his dedication to addressing important issues impacting Ghanaians.
Mr. Mahama restated his promise to remove the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-Levy) and the levy on gains from betting if he is elected as part of his electoral campaign plan.
He criticized the E-Levy for failing to generate the required amount of income and for placing undue financial burden on the people.
The former president promised the young people that he would provide a wealth of employment options that would satisfy their varied wants and goals.
“We will create the jobs that young people have been waiting for, and when the jobs are created, no one will be left behind,” Mr. Mahama said at the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Accra 2024 Youth Manifesto launch on Monday.
Mr. Mahama, who intends to use the youth vote to his advantage in order to win back the presidency, stated that the next NDC government would address the urgent issues of unemployment, underemployment, and skills mismatch that have long beset the nation’s youth by emphasizing inclusivity and equal access.
He emphasized the significance of young involvement and empowerment in the growth of the nation, saying that the future NDC administration will lay the groundwork for the country’s youth to flourish.
“As we celebrate young people’s contribution to leveraging digital tools for positive change, I am proud to reaffirm our pledge, the Mahama and Naana supporting digital startups and incubation hubs, and training one million young Ghanaians in coding,” the former President said.
He said that the coding endeavor was included in the NDC’s 2020 platform and that any copies of it that were made elsewhere had to be obtained by copying the party.
“Go to the NDC 2020 manifesto and look at page 88; you will see the million coders program there if you want to know who has plagiarized who,” Mr. Mahama added.
He went on to emphasize the 24-hour economy policy’s potential as a catalyst for increasing peoples’ access to employment possibilities.
