Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, the South Dayi Member of Parliament, has denounced the Electoral Commission’s (EC) proposal to charge individuals 50pesewa to verify their eligibility and names on the voter register using a USSD code.

According to Ghana’s election regulatory body, those who are unable to attend district centers to verify their eligibility can do so for a fee via using a USSD number.

Speaking with Lantam Papanko on Morning Starr, Nelson-Dafeamekpor called the charge “unlawful” and asked the EC to remove it right now.

“The EC cannot unilaterally determine fees for services. Parliament must approve such charges.

“The people should have free access to determine if their names are included in the register. That’s why the exhibition of the Provisional Voters Register is a major exercise, funded by the state,” Nelson-Dafeamekpor added.

He expressed worries about residents who cannot pay the 50 pesewa fee and questioned the charge’s fairness.

“I cannot use the short code if I do not pay the 50 pesewa,” Nelson Dafeamekpor said. What occurs if I am unable to make the payment?

The USSD service should be included in the EC’s budget and presented to Parliament for approval, Nelson-Dafeamekpor said.

“All services provided by the EC are funded by the state and approved by Parliament,” he declared.

Although there was little participation on the first day of the voter exhibition exercise, Nelson-Dafeamekpor was hopeful that his constituency would have a strong presence today.
