Leading up to the much-anticipated general elections in December, the New Patriotic Party seems to be losing important members, several of whom have announced their plans to run as independent candidates.

Politicians anticipate fielding their best candidates in the parliamentary elections due to the significance of the contest and the desire to keep a lead over rivals.

Apparently, the ruling NPP does not feel that way.

Two of the party’s current members of parliament have resigned and both have announced their intention to run as independents with just four months till the elections.

The sitting member of parliament for the Suhum seat is reportedly planning to run as an independent in the December elections following his defeat in the party’s primary by Frank Asiedu Bekoe.

In the Suhum Municipality, a campaign poster for independent candidate Kwadwo Asante appeared with his name and message.

Although the MP hasn’t formally announced, those close to him claim they are getting requests from interested parties and market women to run as an independent candidate.

Asante’s independent candidacy may make it more difficult for the NPP to win the upcoming elections in Suhum, which has historically been a bastion for the party.

As the election draws near, the Suhum MP has not yet released an official comment about the persistent rumors that he will run for parliament.
