A re-run of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) primary in the Walewale constituency has been mandated by the Tamale High Court in the Northern Region.
This follows Hajia Lariba Zuweratu, the current parliamentarian, filing a judicial challenge.
Just a few days remain until the deadline for submitting nominations for the general election scheduled for December 7, 2024, when Justice Richard Kogyapwah issued the decision on Monday, September 2, 2024.
According to Justice Kogyapwah, the entire ruling will be read aloud on Thursday, September 12, 2024.
The ruling comes after Dr. Mahama Tia Kabiru was previously barred from holding himself as the elected parliamentary candidate for Walewale in June 2024 by an earlier injunction.
In a fiercely fought primary in January, Dr. Kabiru, a 35-year-old PhD holder and special advisor to the Vice President, narrowly beat Hajia Lariba, garnering 345 votes to 338.
Regional and constituency executives were present during the well guarded election.
Hajia Lariba disagreed with the result and filed an ex parte application in the Tamale High Court, claiming that the Electoral Commission, the party, and Dr. Kabiru were all involved in electoral fraud.
Her plea for an order was granted by the court.
Jangdoo Mahama and Tahiru Sham-Una, the other two contenders, got 145 and 1 votes, respectively. At first, the NPP asked for the lawsuit to be dismissed, claiming that Hajia Lariba had broken party policy by not using internal dispute resolution procedures before going to court.
Prior to the court’s order, NPP supporters in Walewale had urged Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s presidential candidate, to step in and mediate the conflict, citing fear that a failure to do so would harm the party’s prospects in the approaching general elections.
