The National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s (2020) presidential candidate, John Mahama, has promised to supplement a court-mandated settlement to the victims of the violence that took place in Techiman during the 2020 election season.

The former president expressed gratitude to the courts for taking action to provide some solace to the victims of the notorious massacres in Techiman, even if he felt that more might have been done in terms of compensation.

The National Election Security Taskforce declared in 2020 that there had been five fatalities nationwide as a result of electoral and post-election violence. Later on, it became known that there were now eight fatalities.

Mr. Mahama expressed his gratitude to the court but also asked that the NDC launch a probe into the event, warning that if those guilty got away with it, there may be repercussions.

“I’ve heard that a Ghanaian court has awarded a GHC275,000 compensation to the victims of the violence [in Techiman during Election 2020]. I thought it should have been more than that but I thank God the court has ruled that they be given something and when the NDC comes to power, we will do whatever we can to support the victims.

“But when the NDC comes into office, we will launch an investigation into why the incident happened because if we do not, the culprits might repeat these acts elsewhere. The accountability will serve as a deterrent to others,” at a rally in Techiman, former President Mahama remarked.

In an interview, he disclosed that the three families who lost loved ones in Techiman during the last election season will receive financial assistance from the administration that he leads.
