Jean Adukwei Mensa, the chair of the Electoral Commission (EC), has stated that the body is unable to declare an election’s winner.

Ghanaians who vote in the elections, she stated, will have the authority to do so.

“We don’t have the power to determine who wins elections; the citizens and the citizens alone can determine who wins, not the EC,” she remarked during a news conference held in Accra on Friday, September 20, following the announcement of the authorized presidential candidates.

Thirteen candidates will run in the presidential election on December 7th, according to the Electoral Commission’s approval.

“Following the successful conduct of the Filing of Nominations from the 9th of September to the 13th of September, 2024, the Commission instituted a thorough examination of the Nomination Forms submitted by the Candidates to ensure conformity with requirements as set out in law,” an earlier press release announced.

“The Electoral Commission wishes to inform the General Public that the following persons have successfully gone through the Nomination process and qualify to contest as Candidates in the 2024 Presidential Election,” it concluded.
