Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, a former minister for the environment, science, technology, and innovation, has urged President Akufo-Addo to respond to the mounting calls from labour unions and other groups to stop the widespread destruction of forest reserves and water bodies caused by illegal mining, also known as galamsey.
For the sake of the future of the country, he emphasized how critical it is to confront this environmental catastrophe.
The President has the last say over whether or not to take effective action against the galamsey issue, which persists in endangering the nation’s natural resources, Professor Frimpong-Boateng said.
He pleaded on the President to put the needs of the Ghanaian people first and take action to stop the harm.
If prompt action is not taken, the former minister warned, the future of the nation is seriously jeopardized.
He urged the President to take prompt action to protect Ghana’s environment and ensure the welfare of the generations to come.
“Heed the call of citizens, CSOs, professionals, academics, research institutions and trade unions to bring an end to the destruction of our forest, water bodies and associated biodiversity.”
“The very existence and future of Ghana are very at stake and Mr President I know you care…Disobedience and destruction of nature cannot be endured for too long,” During the Asogli Yam Festival’s climax on Saturday, October 5, in a big durbar, Prof. Frmpong made an address.
Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng also took use of the occasion to exhort the young of Ghana to take charge and hold their leaders responsible for the difficulties they encounter.
He emphasized the need of young action in promoting accountable leadership and guaranteeing that the demands of the populace are met.
The distinguished scholar further urged the upcoming administration to give priority to employment generation and environmental rehabilitation.
He asserts that the top priorities for any incoming government should be addressing unemployment and restoring Ghana’s natural wealth.
