The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has vowed to oppose discrimination of this kind and has issued a warning against any attempt to prevent Ghanaians residing in Togo from taking part in the general elections in 2024.

NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia blasted the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) for their handling of the Representation of the People Amendment Law (ROPAL) during a rally in Ziope, a border town in the Agotime Ziope Constituency of the Volta Region.

He questioned why Ghanaians are being excluded from voting in nearby Togo yet allowed to vote in far-off places like the United States.

“So, the logic they want us to understand is that if you are a Ghanaian living in America and you fly to Kotoka International Airport, they will allow you to vote, but if you are a Ghanaian living in Togo and you want to come and vote in your hometown, they say you are a Togolese, a stranger, so we must not allow you to vote. We shall not accept that discrimination,” the NDC national chairman stated.

In addition, he warned voters in the NDC stronghold to exercise caution because he suspected the NPP would try to stop family members from crossing the border to cast ballots.

“They [NPP] will find every reason to prevent you from voting and to prevent those who live in Togo from coming to their own country to vote,” he warned.

The national chairman of the party emphasized the difficulties the people have had to deal with under the current administration in his appeal for the people to support the NDC in the next elections.

“We don’t need to convince you to vote for NDC because you suffer most when NPP is in power. If you want to continue living under that suffering, it is up to you,” he said.

In order to assist the party, get 25,000 votes in the constituency on December 7, Charles Agbeve, the NDC’s parliamentary candidate for Agotime Ziope, repeated the appeal and urged voters to turn out in force.
