An injunction has been granted against Cynthia Morrison’s nomination as an independent parliamentary candidate for the Agona West Constituency in the Central Region by a District Magistrate Court located in Agona Swedru.
She is not allowed to run for office until a pending lawsuit is completely settled by the court, according to the injunction.
Cynthia Morrison, a former New Patriotic Party (NPP) member for Agona West who won the parliamentary seat in 2016 and 2020, made the decision to run on her own behalf after complaining that she was treated unfairly by her party during the internal primary for the 2024 election.
About three months ago, she declared her intention to run as an independent after losing the NPP’s parliamentary primary.
Morrison received 152 votes in the primary in April 2024, while Christopher Arthur received 240 votes to win the nomination.
Morrison has insisted that, despite her defeat, her intention to run as an independent in the next election was motivated by her desire to carry on expanding Agona West.
Her candidacy is doubtful because of the court’s injunction since the matter may not be resolved before the election, which is less than two months away from the 2024 elections.
She is prohibited from running for office until the magistrate’s order is fulfilled.
Despite the legal and political obstacles, Madam Morrison, the former Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, urged her supporters to vote for her independent candidacy, stating that the development of Agona West remained her top priority.
