The public has been reassured by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus in Parliament, that his party would not participate in any kind of violent conflict during the next parliamentary session on Tuesday, October 22.

Threats from opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs to take over the majority side of Parliament prompted him to make these comments in an interview with Accra-based Peace FM on Monday, October 21.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin emphasized that if the NDC MPs try to fight with them or take over their seats by force, the NPP MPs will choose to walk out since they are not violent.

He reaffirmed the NPP caucus’s dedication to upholding civility and harmony in the House.

This comes after NDC MPs threatened to become the new majority caucus in Parliament after Speaker Alban Bagbin announced that four parliamentary seats were vacant.

The Supreme Court, however, has overturned the Speaker’s decision, enabling the four impacted MPs to keep serving their constituents.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin said that the NPP will continue to observe the legal procedures and will not be involved in any conflict, even if the NDC MPs, led by Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, claimed they were the new majority caucus based on the Speaker’s decision.

“As far as we are concerned, the Supreme Court has issued a directive, and Parliament will be served. If the need arises, we will simply walk out,” Afenyo-Markin stated.

“I can assure of that, there won’t be any showdown or whatever tomorrow. We are law abiding people and we won’t use the laxity for violence. Should they take over our seats, or do anything that is untoward, I will lead a walkout,” Afenyo stated.
