The University Teachers Association of Ghana has formally called off its strike, which was started in protest of the harm that illicit mining, often known as galamsey, is causing to Ghana’s people and environment.
Professor Mamudu Akudugu, National President of UTAG, said in a news statement on Tuesday, October 29, that ending the strike was a difficult but necessary choice.
He stated that the association’s goal is to keep pushing for laws that adequately address the environmental catastrophe brought on by illicit mining.
In an attempt to protect the country’s natural resources and public health, UTAG reiterated its resolve to continue pushing for long-term solutions to the Galamsey problem.
The association emphasized how vital it is to have policies in place that guarantee a sustainable method of managing resources.
The public was also comforted by the declaration that UTAG is committed to its fight against illicit mining, guaranteeing continued efforts to save Ghana’s ecosystems and promote changes that would ensure a safer future for all Ghanaians.
“Suspending the strike was not an easy decision, as we recognize the importance of the cause we are advocating for. We understand that this may disappoint some members of the public, and we do not take their confidence in us lightly.”
“However, the current circumstances in the country as well as the interests of our students and their parents/guardians have made it necessary to explore alternative legal avenues to address this critical issue.”
“Our efforts will continue, resolute and focused, on opposing those who exploit our natural resources with disregard for the law or the well-being of our communities. Together, we will work to protect our shared future and uphold the principles of environmental stewardship, justice, and sustainable development,” the statement added.
