Former President John Mahama has demanded a halt to what he refers to as “the militarization of our elections,” in which security personnel and armed military personnel are stationed at collation centers and polling stations.

He claimed that in order to keep the nation’s election process sane, the practice needed to be discontinued since it was a surefire way to end up in disarray.

At the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council’s 2024 Peace Campaign, which was held at State House in Accra before of the December elections in cooperation with the Christian Council and the Office of the National Chief Imam, Mahama made this pledge while promising to promote peace.

According to the former president, the National Democratic Congress, his party, would formally propose to the National Peace Council that all other significant election-related parties be added to the list of signatories to the Peace Pact.

He said it would compel other significant institutions to carry out their functions in a way that promotes a peaceful election.

“We are hopeful that this will transform the pact from a meaningless piece of ceremonial paper into a more legally binding commitment to peace,” he stated.

In the case of any electoral issues, Mahama asked the Electoral Commission (EC) to be unbiased and the judiciary to be fair and neutral, stating that peace requires justice.

“There is wisdom in the saying a stitch in time saves nine. Many conflicts worldwide began when people ignored injustices until the oppressed felt forced to respond. While I am and will remain a man of peace, I urge everyone to stay vigilant and to stand for justice,” he said.

Mahama gave the audience his word that he and the NDC will not only advocate for peace but also pledge to uphold it before, during, and after the elections.

“We have a strong stake in maintaining the peace of Ghana and would work for a peaceful Ghana that fosters progress and happiness for every citizen.”

“I, John Dramani-Mahama, stand here today before you and before the Almighty God to reaffirm my commitment and that of the National Democratic Congress to uphold peace before, during, and after the upcoming elections on December 7, 2024,” Mahama stated.
