The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been criticized by Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the vice presidential candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), for establishing a vigilante group on the same day that the country launched its National Peace Campaign in preparation for the 2024 elections.
Speaking during a community engagement in Duadaso, Jaman North Constituency, Dr. Prempeh urged Ghanaians to “vote wisely” for a party that prioritizes national harmony, expressing his severe displeasure of the NDC’s alleged disrespect for peace.
According to Dr. Prempeh, also referred to as “Napo,” the NDC’s activities demonstrate their disregard for the advancement and well-being of regular Ghanaians.
He claimed that the NDC would even jeopardize national stability in order to accomplish their goals, placing electoral win before peace.
He used the NDC’s recent formation of a group known as the “Ashanti Region Azorka Boys,” which he characterized as a vigilante group despite Ghana’s anti-vigilante law that forbids such groups, as proof.
Napo also cited earlier remarks made by John Dramani Mahama, the NDC’s presidential candidate, who discussed the party’s revolutionary origins and its capacity to organize support for causes that call for the use of force.
Mahama was reassured by Dr. Prempeh that the NPP is still dedicated to peace and will fight on principles rather than bloodshed.
Napo met with the chiefs and residents of Jinijini on his campaign visit to the Berekum West Constituency.
He underlined Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s commitment to collaborating closely with traditional leaders in order to promote regional growth and national unity.
He promised that traditional leaders’ well-being will be given top priority in any future Bawumia-led government, acknowledging their importance as partners in governance.
During his visit, Dr. Prempeh presented a bus on behalf of Dr. Bawumia, fulfilling a previous commitment to the Berekum Traditional Council.
The purpose of this gift, which was requested during a prior campaign visit, is to support the traditional council in their roles within the community and increase their mobility.
Nana Asare Baffour, the chief of Jinijini, thanked the NPP for the substantial progress the district has made since its founding seven years ago.
