John Dramani Mahama, the presidential candidate of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has criticized Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), for his recent pledge to create jobs for young people, pointing to the government’s inability to fulfill earlier promises to create jobs.
The remarks were made by the NDC flagbearer during a campaign tour in Kwamikrom, Biakoye constituency, where he questioned the authenticity of Dr. Bawumia’s promise to give youth employment top priority as the presidential election on December 7 draws near.
He brought attention to the predicament of former trainees for the Nation Builders Corps (NABCO), who had yet to get their allowances after several months of waiting.
“Dr. Bawumia should first address the outstanding NABCO debts before making new promises,” Mr. Mahama asserted, emphasising that addressing these unpaid allowances would lend credibility to any future job creation initiatives.
“The governing NPP promised to provide jobs for the NABCO trainees after completion. It has been over three years, and that has not happened. The allowances they also promised them during the training have not been paid.”
“It is really sad because all attempts by the trainees to have their concerns addressed have been unsuccessful,” Mr. Mahama said, expressing concern for the NABCO trainees. Dr. Bawumia should first address the problems of the youth if he is truly dedicated to giving them jobs.
