Members of Parliament (MPs) of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia, have been encouraged to abstain from any emergency recall of the House.

He underlined that the NDC will not permit a chosen few to jeopardize the country’s institutions, restating the party’s dedication to defending Ghana’s democratic foundation.

Speaking at Asasetre in the Western Region’s Ellembelle constituency as part of his retail campaign, Mr. Nketia emphasized the crucial role that Parliament plays in preserving Ghana’s democracy.

“Parliament is the backbone of Ghana’s democratic system,” he said. “Without it, democracy would be nonexistent. We must rally behind Parliament, as it embodies the will of the people and ensures power isn’t concentrated in one person’s hands.”

He warned that weakening Parliament would endanger Ghana’s democracy:
“A robust democracy cannot exist without parliament’s active involvement. Ignoring or weakening Parliament would undermine democratic governance, allowing authoritarianism to flourish.”

He directed NDC MPs to stand firm in boycotting any emergency recall, questioning the motives behind such a move:
“The current situation in Parliament with judges warning of a potential collapsing of government business if Parliament doesn’t convene—I’m unclear which government they’re referring to. Amidst this uncertainty, I’m advising NDC members of Parliament to boycott any emergency recall.”

Asiedu Nketia also urged party members to vote overwhelmingly for NDC leadership in the forthcoming elections as a sign of their dedication to democracy.

“As we head to the polls, let’s demonstrate our commitment to Ghana’s democracy by voting overwhelmingly for our NDC leadership and parliamentary candidates,” Mr Nketia stated.
“This will enable us to have more NDC representatives in Parliament, fostering a stronger presence for our party. By doing so, we’ll be contributing to a more robust democratic process in Ghana” he added.
