The District Electoral Officer (DEO) for the Volta Region’s Afadjato South constituency is being investigated by the Electoral Commission (EC) for delivering election materials in a private car without a police escort.
Following their discovery of the procedure violation, Ghana Police Service officials questioned the DEO on Thursday, December 5, 2024. Since then, the election materials in question have been seized by the police.
The EC admitted that the officer’s conduct were against its established policies in a statement signed by Samuel Tettey, the Deputy Chairman for Operations.
“The policy of the Commission is for its officers to transport all election materials in official vehicles with police escort where necessary,” the statement read.
The public was reassured by the EC that it is actively cooperating with the police probe while undertaking its own internal inquiries. The Commission stated that the integrity of the next election in the constituency is unaffected by the violation.
“We wish to assure the public that though the officer breached the policy of the Commission, the actions of the officer will not in any way compromise the elections in the Afadjato South constituency,” the statement added.
