President-elect John Dramani Mahama has emphasized his pragmatic leadership style, saying he is not swayed by the temptation of power or the transient perks of high office.
On Sunday, December 15, Mahama spoke during a Thanksgiving service at the Assemblies of God Church in Accra. He discussed the humility lessons he has gained throughout his political career.
He emphasized that even after his overwhelming win in the general elections held on December 7, it is crucial to maintain a connection to the reality of leadership.
During the event, the president-elect also urged Ghanaians to stand cooperatively and work together to address the country’s problems.
Mahama thanked everyone for their support during his years out of power during the Thanksgiving service, adding that after he lost the 2016 elections, “the Christmas hampers stopped coming.”
“When I lost in 2016, the Christmas hampers stopped coming. The many people who used to come to my gate and come and try to get into my house to see me for a minute stopped coming. It was only my siblings, my family, my closest friends and others, my church members who continued to stand closely to me.
“So for me, these trappings of power don’t get to my head. I know that all the praises and blessings you will be showered with by people are temporary, and it is because of the word president attached to your name. One day it will go.”
“And so just as our colleagues in the NPP might be feeling very pained by their loss, it should serve as a lesson to those of us coming to government that the same stick that Takyi has been beaten with, the Ghanaian people are reserving it for Baah,” Mahama stated.
“So, God has made us know that power belongs to the people, but when they have reached their limit, they will show you that power belongs to them and that it is God who has given that power” Mahama added.
Mahama also took the opportunity to express gratitude to Ghanaians for their unwavering faith in him and pledged to lead with humility and a fresh sense of direction.
He emphasized that his win in the 2024 elections was a directive to put in endless effort for the nation’s advancement rather than a chance to revel in his own success.
