Reports in the media that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has pardoned eleven people have been categorically denied by the Office of the President.
Director of Communications Eugene Arhin explained that the reports were false in a statement released on January 6, 2025. The statement stressed that, contrary to what certain media outlets had implied, President Akufo-Addo had not used his prerogative of mercy to pardon the individuals in question.
According to earlier reports, the President has pardoned a number of people, including William Ato Essien, who was found guilty of his role in the Capital Bank collapse. Essien, who has major health issues, was given a 15-year prison sentence after failing to pay a GHS90 million fine.
Other suspected offenders included convicted murderer Akwasi Alhassan, who was serving a life sentence following a 1993 conviction, and Philip Akpeena Assibit, who was found guilty in 2018 of causing financial loss to the State.
Reiterating that these allegations were baseless, the Office of the President made it clear that the President has not pardoned these or any other people as reported.
“We wish to categorically state that these assertions are inaccurate, and no pardon has been granted by President Akufo-Addo,” the statement added.
The public has been advised by the President’s Office to ignore any conflicting information and to only trust official correspondence from the office.
