A significant chapter in Ghana’s legislative history will come to an end today with the official dissolution of the 8th Parliament of the Fourth Republic, which will make way for the swearing-in of the 9th Parliament at midnight.

As this legislative term draws to a conclusion, Members of Parliament (MPs) will close any outstanding business and say goodbye to their positions during the final session of the 8th Parliament, which will be chaired by Speaker Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin.

One of the most distinctive and well-balanced parliaments in Ghana’s political history is the 8th one.

Along with one Independent MP who held the balance of power, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) each started the term with 137 seats.

This unusual arrangement produced a legislative body that was evenly divided and frequently called for more compromise and negotiation.

A vibrant and dynamic legislative climate was created by the balance of power, with important decisions being shaped by alliances, heated discussions, and debates.

According to analysts, Ghana’s democratic processes were greatly impacted by its distinctive composition, which placed a strong emphasis on cooperation and strategic communication.

The 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic will begin with the swearing-in of newly elected Members of Parliament at midnight.

The election of the Speaker of Parliament, where MPs will choose whether to keep the existing Speaker, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, or choose a new one to lead the House, will be a crucial part of the ceremony.

A new legislative term begins with this transition, and it is anticipated that governance, legislative reforms, and national growth would receive more attention.

The task for the new legislators as the 8th Parliament comes to an end is to build on its legacy while tackling the urgent problems facing the country.
