President John Mahama has promised to improve the condition of marketplaces across the country in the aftermath of the devastating fire breakouts that destroyed Kantamanto and a few other markets.

The president said that the improvements were the result of a campaign pledge to update markets all around the nation when speaking with the traders’ leadership at the Kantamanto market.

“In our manifesto, we have the Market Enhancement Program which is aimed at giving all markets a facelift so that people can be attracted to those places,” he spoke to market leaders in Accra.

Julius Debrah, the president’s chief of staff, was instructed by the president to keep in touch with the traders so that all parties could determine the best way for the government to help the victims of the fire.

In addition to being part of the government’s immediate response to the tragedy, he said the meeting with the chief of staff will help the administration come up with short-term solutions while keeping a long-term plan in mind.

As you may know, a fire at Kantamanto on January 2, 2025, destroyed numerous stores and buildings, resulting in extensive damage.

Many of the vendors who run stores there have reported losses of thousands of cedis since the outbreak.

The Leader of New Force, Nana Kwame Bediako, former Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and Vice-President Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyeman are among the prominent people and organizations who have donated to the traders.

Meanwhile, Sunday’s fire destroyed multiple stores in the Techiman Central Market, leaving numerous traders in despair.
