President John Dramani Mahama has strongly warned newly appointed ministers not to get involved in illicit mining operations.

This statement was given by the president earlier on Thursday, January 30, 2025, during the swearing-in ceremony for 14 ministers.

President Mahama stated in his speech that the administration is committed to tackling the problem of illicit mining, or “galamsey,” and that stakeholder consultations will be held to address it.

“No member of this government is allowed to participate in any form of small-scale mining or galamsey. Anyone found engaging in such activities will face swift and severe consequences. We plan to hold stakeholder consultations on the galamsey menace to build a broad consensus on the steps needed to protect our environment from further destruction,” he stated.

President Mahama further declared that all mining leases issued for operations in forest reserves by the previous administration will be revoked.

This ruling is a component of larger initiatives to protect the nation’s natural resources and stop environmental harm brought on by illicit and unsustainable mining operations.

The President underlined that legal action will be taken against those involved and that quick action would be made to stop mining operations in these environmentally vulnerable areas.
