Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the former vice president, has advised the New Patriotic Party’s members to put the party’s interests ahead of their own and avoid squabbling.
Dr. Bawumia pointed out that pointing fingers and making personal attacks on one another do not bode well for the party’s unity, which he said is necessary going forward.
Dr. Bawumia welcomed a group of party supporters to his home on Monday night and urged party members to foster unity among all tiers of the organization.
“I want to appeal to everyone, all of us, to be mindful of our utterances in order not to hurt and jeopardise the unity of our party, which we need,” he stated.
“We need unity and if we tear ourselves apart now, we will not be able to unite and rebuild for the battle ahead in 2028,” Dr. Bawumia said.
Although Dr. Bawumia acknowledged that party members were anxious to talk about how the party performed in the 2024 election, he cautioned that such discussions, especially in the media, should be moderated to avoid creating deep fissures that would be challenging to patch.
“We weaken our might and strength when we disintegrate as a party so anything which will divide us as a family, and affect our unity and strength, should be completely avoided,” Dr. Bawumia urged.
For the first time since he left his official residence prior to the presidential inauguration last month, the group, which included MPs, former appointees, party executives at various levels, and NPP members, said the visit was a courtesy call on the former vice president and was also intended to “check how he is doing after leaving office.”
Additionally, they praised Dr. Bawumia for his “remarkable manner” of behaving throughout his one month in office and following the 2024 election.
The party faithful were thanked by Dr. Bawumia for their nice words and visit.
