Three different petitions demanding the removal of Ghana’s Chief Justice have been received, and President John Dramani Mahama has started a deliberation process with the Council of State.
The development was verified in a statement released by the Presidency’s Communications Directorate and signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, spokesperson to the president and minister for government communications.
Various people filed the applications, according to the statement, asking for the Chief Justice to be removed for reasons that have not yet been made public.
In compliance with Article 146 of the Constitution of 1992, the petitions have been sent to the Council of State by the President in order to initiate the required consultation process.
According to Article 146, the President must act upon receiving a petition and consulting the Council of State before removing a Chief Justice or any other judge of a higher court.
In Ghana’s legal and political context, the removal of a Chief Justice is an uncommon and important procedure, hence this move has aroused popular interest.
