The petitions to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office as of Monday, April 7, 2025, have received her official response.

Justice Torkornoo sent her response to President John Dramani Mahama and the Council of State prior to the 10-day deadline that President Mahama set when the petitions were filed, according to a report by 3news.com.

Her official response has now been submitted, the paper stated, and the Council of State will start the assessment process to see if there is enough evidence to support further action.

Justice Torkornoo was given ten working days by President Mahama to reply to the three different petitions that called for her dismissal.

In accordance with due process standards, Justice Torkornoo sought copies of the petitions and asked for at least seven days to answer in a letter sent to President Mahama on March 27, 2025.

After three petitions were filed calling for Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo’s dismissal, President Mahama started speaking with the Council of State on March 25, 2025.

The three petitions were sent to the Council of State in compliance with the constitutional process specified in Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution, according to a statement made by Kwakye Ofosu, Minister for Government Communications.

Although the specifics of the petitions are still unknown, the occurrence signifies the start of a formal procedure that may result in major adjustments to Ghana’s legal system.
