Nine radio stations in Ghana have had their activities suspended by the National Communications Authority (NCA) due to numerous regulatory violations. Three of these stations are owned by Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, also known as Wontumi, the chairman of the Ashanti regional NPP.
The decision, which was made public in a statement on August 12, comes after President John Dramani Mahama’s 30-day grace period for defaulting stations to correct broadcasting rule violations lapsed.
“Six stations failed, refused and neglected to comply with the regulatory amnesty by taking no action,” the NCA stated.
The regulator claims that although a number of non-compliant stations took action to correct violations during the amnesty period, three others neglected to address specific infractions, such as operating at unapproved transmitter locations and using Studio-to-Transmitter Link (STL) frequencies without authorization.
In violation of Regulation 54 of the Electronic Communications Regulations, 2011 (L.I. 1991), the Authority emphasized that these stations were functioning without a current Certificate of Compliance.
“Consequently, the operations of the following stations have been suspended,” the statement added.
Among the stations impacted are Kandai Star Community Radio (Kpandai, 107.3), Dreams Ghana Media Limited (New Abirem, 104.9), Jam Multimedia Limited (Kintampo, 101.3), Jewel Group Limited (Duayaw Nkwanta, 102.7), Donplus Multimedia Limited (Ho, 105.9), and Unique Gateway Communication Limited. Additionally, there are three locations of Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited, which are based in Accra (95.9), Kumasi (101.3), and Takoradi (101.3).
In order to preserve integrity and order in Ghana’s media environment, the NCA reaffirmed its dedication to upholding broadcasting rules.
The statement ended by saying, “The NCA will continue to monitor the broadcasting space to ensure compliance with the relevant authorisation conditions and the laws and regulations.”
