“You sound more like a foot soldier than a lawyer” – NDC replies Godfred Dame

Godfred Dame, the Attorney General, has been accused of bias by the National Democratic Congress’ Legal Affairs Directorate.

The Attorney General, who belongs to the New Patriotic Party, has allegedly failed to respect the standards of a minister of justice instead showing his political prejudice (NPP).

“Godfred Dame’s partisanship and bias as an NPP member is not in doubt. However, one would have thought that he would be mindful of his position as the Minister for Justice and leader of the Bar which requires that he demonstrates a certain degree of maturity required of him by virtue of his position. Unfortunately, that is not the case. Sometimes, Mr. Dame speaks like a typical NPP foot soldier other than a lawyer and for that matter the Attorney-General,” the statement added.

The NDC’s remarks follow those made by the Attorney General at the Ghana Bar Association’s Annual Conference, where he voiced displeasure over former president John Dramani Mahama’s claims that the court was politically biased.

“Mr. President, the judiciary has consistently demonstrated that it is the last line of defense for our nation. It was therefore with great dismay and embracement that I heard a person who has held the highest office of the state, former president John Mahama, recently launch an unwarranted attack on the integrity of Ghana’s judiciary,” he said. He added that this is the most recent in a series of systematic attacks on our courts by the former president, all of them unjustified.

However, the Attorney-General insisted that the problems he is dealing with are not related to John Dramani Mahama personally, but rather to the remarks the latter made.

“It’s crucial for everyone to know that I don’t convey this sentiment because I disagree with John Mahama as a politician.

I’m a lawyer, and any lawyer should be concerned about the kinds of beliefs espoused by a political leader in this nation, so that’s why I’m more appalled than anything else,” he said.
