Calls to abolish the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) have been met with resistance by President John Dramani Mahama, who has urged the people to give the organization more time to fulfill its purpose.

His comments coincide with a growing discussion about the OSP’s usefulness, with some detractors contending that it should be abolished because it hasn’t had a significant influence.

During a meeting with the National Peace Council, President Mahama emphasized that it would be hasty and ineffective to dismantle the OSP at this point, pointing out the necessity of bolstering organizations that support transparency and sound governance.

Additionally, he urged the OSP to speed up its investigations and work more efficiently.

“I think it is premature to call for the scrapping of the Office of the Special Prosecutor. We should give them a little time, and I urge the office to speed up with its work,” Mahama stated.

Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga had initially called for the OSP’s abolition after private attorney Martin Kpebu was detained.

Since then, a number of people have supported the demand, including former Speaker of Parliament Mike Oquaye.
