Ghana Card required for all motor insurance

Spread the love

Starting January 1, 2026, all drivers in Ghana must present their Ghana Card to purchase or renew any motor insurance policy, as stated by the National Insurance Commission (NIC).

In a statement released by the Acting Commissioner of Insurance, Dr. Abiba Zakariah, the Commission announced that the directive forms part of wider efforts to enhance oversight and boost accountability within the insurance sector.

According to the updated regulations, anyone wanting motor insurance services is required to show a valid Ghana Card during the purchase or renewal process. Companies and other corporate organizations will also be required to provide their Tax Identification Number (TIN) for all transactions related to vehicle insurance.

The NIC stated that the initiative will enhance claims processing efficiency, improve customer identification and anti–money laundering measures, reduce insurance fraud, and align Ghana’s insurance industry with global best practices in financial services.

Drivers have been urged to understand the policy and make sure they possess their Ghana Card when utilizing motor insurance services once the directive is implemented.
