Soldier arrested for attempting to sell guns in Kumasi

A Warrant Officer Class II from the Ghana Armed Forces has been detained for reportedly trying to sell firearms to a civilian.

After an intelligence operation conducted by the Regional Director of the Ashanti South Police Intelligence Directorate (PID), ASP Princeton Peasah Darkwa, the suspect, known as W.O. II David Kofi Brew from the 4th Battalion, Kumasi, was detained on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, around 2:30 pm at the Bekwai Shell Filling Station where he intended to sell firearms to an undercover police officer.

A situational report from the Ashanti South PID indicates that the operation was part of ongoing initiatives to break up networks providing weapons to criminal factions in Obuasi and nearby areas.

Initial intelligence suggested that the military officer was reportedly engaged in the unlawful distribution of weapons.

Based on this information, the police opted to deploy undercover operatives to interact with the suspect on December 15, 2025, when he arrived in a military vehicle with the registration number 54 GA 92 to meet an operative.

According to police reports, the suspect informed the undercover agent that he could provide M16, G3, pistols, and various other firearms. The undercover agent consented to buy an M16 rifle, and the military officer set the price at GHC80,000.

On December 16, 2025, around 2:30 pm, the suspect informed the undercover agent that the firearm and another pistol were set for collection. He encountered the agent at Bekwai Shell filling Station and during the transfer of the weapons, he was apprehended along with the weapons.

Items taken during the arrest comprised a TMM 22 assault rifle loaded with 99 rounds of ammo and two 12-round magazines, alongside an Ash Taurus GX2 pistol featuring 100 rounds of ammunition and three 12-round magazines.

The guy acknowledged during questioning that he sells the firearms to residents of Obuasi and the surrounding area. The suspect is being held pending official notice to his superiors and additional action.

In order to take the appropriate action, efforts are being made to apprehend his collaborators as well.
