The Ghanaian Parliament has enacted new legislation to alter the names of certain universities in the country.
According to the new legislation, the C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences will be referred to as the University of Technology and Applied Sciences, Navrongo. The S.D. Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies will henceforth be referred to as the University of Business and Integrated Development Studies, while the Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development will be known as the University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development, Kumasi.
The new law was approved by Parliament on Friday, December 19.
The C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences was founded through an Act of Parliament (Act 1000) that was approved on 2nd August 2019, with approval granted on 23rd August 2019. The Bill aims to modify the C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences Act, 2019 (Act 1000) to rename the University as the University of Technology and Applied Sciences, Navrongo.
Renaming the University enhances relationships with key stakeholders, increasing public interest and resulting in greater enrolment, funding, and backing from alumni and other supporters. This revived focus will encourage increased investment in higher education, enhancing both the educational and economic environments.
The committee’s report on education mentioned that “Many universities globally are changing names to reflect contemporary values and social justice. By following this trend, the University will enhance its global competitiveness and appeal to international students.”
Concerning the Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies, it was founded through an Act of Parliament (Act 1001) which was approved on 2nd August, 2019, with consent granted on 23rd August, 2019.
The Bill aims to modify the Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies Act, 2020 (Act 1001) to rename the University as the University of Business and Integrated Development Studies.
The renaming of the University strengthens connections with key stakeholders to enhance public interest, resulting in increased enrollment, funding, and backing from alumni and other supporters. This revitalized focus will promote increased investment in higher education, enhancing both the educational and economic environments.
