The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II today, visited the Bank Square in Accra to make a courtesy call on the Bank of Ghana (BoG) Governor, Dr. Johnson Asiama.
The visit is largely viewed as strengthening communication between conventional leaders and the nation’s economic administrators.
While ceremonial in nature, the visit also holds considerable national importance, occurring as Ghana achieves notable advancements in stabilizing its economy.
In his speech, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II emphasized the significance of a stable financial system for the advancement of the country and praised the Bank for its efforts to control inflation, oversee the banking industry, and aid in economic recovery.
“I am here to encourage you. When the currency is healthy, the economy bristles with opportunities, the people are able to use the opportunities to create business, the business allows the people to create jobs, and ultimately walk in wealth”, Otumfuo stated.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, a highly regarded traditional leader in the country, has consistently engaged in promoting policies that foster economic growth, bolster private sector development, and ensure social stability.
His interaction with the central bank officials highlights the significance of conventional authority in discussions about the national economy.
He also engaged in talks with the Governor regarding the wider economic perspective, such as inflation, business credit accessibility, and the necessity to bolster public trust in financial entities, matters that directly impact traders, entrepreneurs, and families nationwide.
The Asantehene urged political leaders to use caution when interacting with the Bank of Ghana, characterizing it as a vital national institution that affects all citizens.
“This is a unique institution with a mandate that ultimately affects every citizen of the land. Ideally, this citadel should be a fortress insulated from the strings and arrows of the political warfare. Whatever it is, we should think twice before we do anything that has the capacity to cast a snare on the integrity of the bank,” Otumfuo stated.
“I will appeal to the nation and both sides of the political divide to give the Governor, my son and his team a chance, give them the space and respect to perform their professional duties. Support them along the right path. This is our bank; if they fail, we risk collapse, if they succeed, we walk in wealth and in glory,” the Asantehene added.
Apart from policy discussions, the courtesy visit also represents institutional respect and continuity, strengthening the bond between Ghana’s traditional leadership and government institutions.
Governor Dr. Asiama praised the Asantehene’s leadership, citing his wisdom and stability in national matters.
“Ghana’s recovery must now move beyond better statistics to better livelihoods. It must translate into jobs for the youth, stronger local industry, affordable credit that does not reignite inflation, and a financial system that supports enterprise and long-term investment. The Bank of Ghana is fully committed to playing its role, firmly, independently, and professionally, so that the gains we are beginning to see become durable and inclusive” Dr Asiamah stated.
“I recall very clearly the last time the Board and Management of the Bank of Ghana paid homage to Your Majesty at Manhyia. On that occasion, you asked a question that was both simple and profound. You observed that the cedi was appreciating against the US dollar, and you asked whether that appreciation was sustainable. It was a legitimate question, one that went beyond the exchange rate itself to the deeper issue of credibility. It was a question many Ghanaians were asking quietly in their homes, shops, and offices: is this improvement real, and will it last?
I am pleased to say that, since then, the underlying foundations of the economy have strengthened in important ways” he added.
